"I wrote this song as a metaphor about life, love, loss and everything that we all go through. The first verse is about my father and the second verse is about a friend I lost in my early 20s. But it also works on the surface level as a tribute to the brave firefighters who risk everything to save strangers."

lyrics
Danny was just seventeen
(When) he joined the fire brigade
Half his life he gave to the fight
That lesser men had made
Raised him up a family
A wife and three young kids
And when his youngest was just a boy
The fires they did him in
Here’s one to the firefighters’ union
They step in to battle down the flames
The bravest souls become the coals
On which their war was waged
But the war will always
Outlive their names
Christopher was a strong man
(He) stepped up to the blaze
And fought alongside the boldest men
The lord had ever made
‘Til he ran into an apartment fire
Made it two stories high
When the floor gave out from under his feet
Well, that’s how heroes die
Here’s one to the firefighters’ union
They step in to battle down the flames
The bravest souls become the coals
On which their war was waged
But the war will always
Outlive their names
So come on meet me down at the bar
And order up a drink
And take a shot to the friends we’ve lost
To make our sorrows sink
Bow your head to the wall
We stand and we fall
And we say our prayers in fear
And if we want to honor their memories
Well we can send them up this cheer
Yeah we can send them up this beer!
Here’s one to the firefighters’ union
They step in to battle down the flames
The bravest souls become the coals
On which their war was waged
But the war will always
Outlive their names
Here’s one to the firefighters’ union
They perish by the flame or by the fall
And old age take the rest
The brightest, best
They answer up that call
But the fire, she will outlive us all
