"When I was in my twenties, it seemed like a lot of my friends ended up in California at some point. When I finally went out there to visit, I was enchanted. I know it's kinda cliche, but there is something to that place. I wanted to be there too. It might never happen, but at least this song captured that sentiment at the time. Most of the people I knew out there are somewhere else now, so maybe it's common for that feeling to be fleeting. And maybe the world doesn't need yet another song about California, but alas here it is."

lyrics
Driving wheels, riding brakes
All of my friends, they pulled up stakes
Made their way across this land
Somewhere out in the desert, man
They moved to California
They moved far out West
And they always told me
It’s all for the best
It’s all for the best
They blame it on jobs and family
To me it’s just manifest destiny
And all that’s left is their silhouettes
Chasing the sun down to where it sets
Way out in California
Out to the Golden State
And I can’t help thinking
Maybe that’s my fate
They moved to San Francisco
The desert and L.A.
Someday soon now, baby
I’m gonna make my way
I’m gonna live in California
I’m gonna brave the Pacific coast
Momma, don’t say I didn’t warn ya’
I’m gonna make my way
They moved to California
Out to the Golden State
And I can’t help thinking
When’s my turn, ‘cause that’s my fate, ya’ see
They moved to San Diego
Moved back to Monterey
Someday soon now, baby
I’m gonna make my way
I’m gonna live in California
I’m gonna brave the Pacific coast
Momma, don’t say I didn’t warn ya’
Consider me a ghost
